    3. Prevention

    The EPA puts prevention as the first line of control, describing IPM programs as working to manage the space so that pests never become a threat. It notes that preventive methods are often effective and inexpensive to run, with little to no risk to people or the environment.

    At a house, prevention is mostly plumbing, carpentry and yard work. Water that drains away from the slab. Screens without gaps. Gaps around pipe penetrations closed. Food and pet food in sealed containers. Debris and stored wood off the ground and away from walls. It is unexciting, and it is the part with the longest-lasting effect.     4. Control, chosen by risk

    Only when monitoring, identification and thresholds all say action is needed does IPM reach for control, and even then the EPA describes evaluating methods for both effectiveness and risk. If those are shown not to work, more is done, up to targeted pesticide applications. The final sentence of the EPA’s description is the one to take into any conversation with a company: “Broadcast spraying of non-specific pesticides is a last resort.”

    Why the order matters more in Texas than the products do

    The state runs a long pest season across most of its territory, and a house that is producing pests structurally will keep producing them regardless of what was applied last month. A perimeter treatment does not fix a door sweep. It does not drain a low spot in clay soil, and it does not close a gap around a garage door.   • Standing Water and Mosquitoes in Central Texas: What Actually Reduces Breeding

    Mosquito complaints in Central Texas follow rain. A few wet days across Waco, Temple, Killeen and the surrounding counties, and within a week the yards that had almost nothing are unusable at dusk. The reflex is to spray something. The more effective move, and the one every extension and agency source lands on, is to go find the water.

    This guide covers what actually reduces mosquito breeding around a Central Texas home: which water sources matter, which ones people miss, what to do about water you cannot remove, and where spraying does and does not fit.

    Two different mosquito problems, two different fixes

    It helps to know which kind you are dealing with, because the source is in a different place.

    Floodwater mosquitoes are the ones that show up in numbers after a heavy rain event.     Container mosquitoes are the ones that persist between rains, breeding in the water sitting in objects around the house. They are the ones a homeowner has the most direct control over, and they are the reason a yard can stay bad for weeks with no rain at all.

    Floodwater breeding is largely a drainage and neighborhood-scale issue. Container breeding is a walk around your own property with a bucket.

    The weekly walk that does most of the work

    The EPA’s guidance for homeowners is short and specific: “Eliminate standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed,” and “Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats” (US EPA, Tips to Prevent Mosquito Bites).

    The AgriLife guidance for Texas yards is the same instruction from a different direction: eliminate all sources of standing water, and drain birdbaths, gutters, flowerpots and pet dishes at least once a week.

    Two details in that wording carry most of the weight and get skipped constantly.

    Once a week is not arbitrary. It is short enough to interrupt development before larvae reach the adult stage. A container emptied every other weekend can still produce mosquitoes the whole time.

    Emptying is not the same as scrubbing. Eggs stick to the inner walls of containers above the current water line and survive drying. Tipping a bird bath and refilling it leaves them in place. Wiping or scrubbing the sides is what removes them, which is why the guidance pairs the two actions.

    What holds water around a Central Texas home

    The obvious ones get handled. These are the ones that stay wet:

    • Corrugated drain pipe and French drains that silted up and now hold water in the low sections instead of moving it
    • Air conditioning condensate dripping onto a paver, a saucer or a low spot beside the slab, refreshed daily through a Central Texas summer
    • Rainwater harvesting barrels and cisterns with a missing, torn or gapped inlet screen
    • Livestock and pet troughs, stock tanks and wildlife guzzlers on acreage properties
    • Clay soil low spots and tire ruts that hold a shallow puddle for days after everything else has dried
    • Tarps, boat covers, trailer beds and unused wheelbarrows parked behind the shed
    • Plugged gutters under live oak and pecan, and the flat sections that never drained properly in the first place
    • Old tires, including tire swings, which hold water and shade it from evaporating

    Anything you can tip, tip. Anything you can drill a drain hole in, drill it. Anything you can store upside down or under cover, do that instead of stacking it flat.

    Water you cannot get rid of

    Some water stays: a barrel you use for irrigation, an ornamental feature, a low area that will not regrade this month. For those, the EPA’s Bti fact sheet points to Bti, described as “a biological or a naturally occurring bacterium found in soils” that “can be used around homes in areas and containers where water can collect, such as flower pots, tires, and bird baths.” Homeowner formulations are widely sold as dunks or granules.

    Bti acts on larvae. It does nothing for the adults already in the yard, and it does nothing in a container that has gone dry and will refill next week — the point is to keep treating the water that persists.

    Where spraying actually fits

    Treating adult mosquitoes is not useless, but the sequence matters. The EPA’s own framing, in its guidance on integrated mosquito control, is that adulticiding is what you reach for when “source reduction and larval control have failed or are not feasible” — inside an integrated approach that targets every life stage rather than only the flying one.

    In practice that means a yard treatment applied over unaddressed breeding sites is refilling a bucket with a hole in it. The order is: remove the water, treat the water that has to stay, then consider adult treatment for the gap.     Keeping them out of the house

    Habitat work happens outside; the indoor half is simpler. The EPA’s guidance is to “Make sure window and door screens are in good working order.” Around most Central Texas houses that means checking screen frames for gaps at the corners, replacing torn mesh, closing the gap under a warped exterior door, and making sure a garage entry door actually seals.
